There is hope…
Around the world, over one million people die by suicide each year, the majority due to mental illness. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Behind the statistics are actual people, families, and friends. We have collectively chosen to share our stories of the loved ones we have lost to suicide. We want it to be known how these young people lived, how they were loved, how they struggled, and how they fought to conquer their diseases, until their battles were lost. We are surviving the greatest losses of our lives and strive to continue healing. There is great hope that there will be progress in research and funding for mental health, suicide prevention, and stopping the stigma.

This book is a tough read, there is no doubt about that, because I expect everyone who chooses this book has lost someone dear to them to suicide. I have lost two, and maybe three people very dear to me to this disease. One is written about by my dear sister in this book. Her name is Sarah, my niece and my sister's precious daughter. Unfathomanably, Sarah took her life even though she had so much to live for: wonderful parents, brother, extended family and friends who love her dearly. ...but this illness defies logic. Many suffer so greatly, and that is what this book is about. It is an intimate remembrance, not a judgment of these deeply loved brothers, sisters, children and friends. We wish we could have them still, but their suffering was so great we don't know if such a wish is selfish on our part. I think about Sarah often, as well as my cousin Rich, who also committed suicide. So many thoughts run through my head, and in the end, I have so few answers. The beauty of this book is not that it gives you all the answers, but that it shows you how other people have struggled with these same questions in their own words.

Great book.
This book gives a look into the lives of the parents of kids who committed suicide. It is very hearwrenching and sad- it does hit home because my sister was one of the parents who helped write this book. It truly opens your eyes that suicide does not discriminate. My nephew would be so proud of his mom for trying to educate people. RIP J-lo- the world will never be the same without you in it.
I can't begin to imagine the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. These stories go a long way towards helping me understand the mix of emotions family members and friends face when it happened to them. They shine a bright light on our collective resistance to understanding and accepting mental illnesses as a disease and offer great incentive to begin to view them differently.
A good read, but as I read every story, and realizing that we never really know what goes on in the minds of our children or loved ones, almost scares me. No parent should have to go through that agony.
Very good read if you have lost a loved one to suicide. This book really got through to me that my son died, not as a result of bad parenting, but as a result of mental health. A very real issue that needs far more recognition. Thanks to parents like this that open up their hearts and share their story in an effort to bring the issue into the forefront and to help others like myself to not feel so alone!
This is a great book for healing and becoming aware of all of the other people who are suffering because they lost a loved one to suicide. It connects me to a network of 7 young people and their families. Seven families are not enough to share their pain and growth. That is why I am so glad that the book contained information about support groups for families/friends who lost a young person; support groups all over the world. The cover is great, and there are several pictures inside of these young people. It is sad, but not gory. It is very well written, by a parent for each of the 7, and gives me a lot of hope from the families' sharing of their recovery and personal growth.
Heartbreaking stories, but the stories written by family members are SO well-written. Good to read if you are a struggling parent especially, to realize you are just like the people in the book. It's good to know there are others struggling with the same issues. Maybe you will even get an idea on something to try. If you have read about ONE person with depression and other mental health problems, you may feel less alone!
